When I was told my oil filled coil could be the problem, I was also told the condenser (I was using points ignition) might also be the cause or contributing. I bought a condenser tester but the condenser tested fine. It was at that point that I figured it was the coil.

I never cut open the coil but swapping it with a solid insulated coil solved the problem.

Having said all of that, it is probably something different. Isn't it always.
