the 1960 cap is unique in being completely round with no 'ears' to help twist it. the 61-62 type is just says oil. it gets a little muddy as to when the transition was made to the later styles, but by 64, i believe they were all of the 'engine oil do not overfill ' variety

It appears there were 3 part numbers for the car oil filler cap assembly.

  3788228 used in 60 and 61

3795315 used in perhaps some part of 61? and then 62 and part of 63?

3849800 used some time in 63? and on

I have the Chevrolet Parts History from January 1 1965 on to December 1 1973 but these part numbers all appear to have been removed or superseded before that date. Does anyone have the Chevrolet parts history for 1959 to December 31, 1964? Information from that parts history would tell us the date Chevrolet implement the paperwork change even if the line change came days or weeks later depending on paperwork flow and inventory. Another source would be NOS in known good parts boxes?

  Subject: Stock question

Should my '63 Monza have an oil filler cap that says merely; "Oil"

or one that says "Do Not Overfill?"

larry claypool says he thinks there was a transition from "Oil" to "Do Not Overfill" during the course of the '63 model year but he's not sure if so, and when.

  Here are my car's stats:

  engine manufacture date is 5/20/63

  assembled 3rd wk. of June (i.e. 6/17/63 - 6/21/63)

Currently it says; "Do Not Overfill" but God knows if that's original to the car!

Any thoughts? Anyone else out there whom we should ask?

  Thanks!
