[SCG] RE: SCG Donations - ERRATA

Sorry, I made a couple of errors/omissions in my post about members who
donated additional monies (Too many e-mail messages to review!)

 

First, I forgot to include Bill Chellis, who pledged AND paid $30 (sorry,
Bill - my fault, not Mark's)

 

Second, although Kent and I each initially agreed to match all donations, we
have actually each paid only $120 of our pledges, as I calculated that is
all we needed at the time to have enough money for Marissa to buy the
software.  Kent and I remain committed to the success of the SCG and will
stand by our pledges if need be, but I am hoping we will have sufficient
funding through member dues.

 

I also failed to make clear why these additional funds were pledged.  After
the meeting this summer I was very anxious to get the ball rolling on
developing the new web site and initializing the database, etc.  Marissa
needed money to buy the software and at the rate dues monies were coming in
it did not look good for getting enough money by that method alone.  I did
not think it was fair to try to hit the membership up for more funds when we
had just asked them to pay dues and so few were responding.  As we (SCG
officers and Research committee members) were e-mailing among ourselves, we
kind of set up an individual challenge to raise the needed funds and that is
where the donations came from.  

 

Obviously, we will not refuse additional donation money from whomever wishes
to send it, but it would be nice if we could make this a self-sustaining
organization.  Right now we have a need for start-up capital; down the road
we may not need so much income to maintain, but that depends somewhat on how
well the CORSA server works out for us.  If it serves our needs well we are
in good shape; if not, we will have to either go out and pay for server
space or build our own and pay for internet access, and those are not cheap
options.  Before any of you start sending me links to all the cheap Internet
hosting sites out there I need to point out that we expect to need a LOT of
storage space for all the photos and scans we anticipate putting on the
server.
