Larry Claypool answered this question a couple of years ago. I dug up his

Subject: [SCG] 62 rocker moldings

hi all
while going through some technical service bulletins last night, i found
something i'd missed before. i know there were questions at some point on
1962 rocker panel moldings for monza and 700 models. some had black painted
grooves, some had no paint at all.
in a letter from the Milwaukee zone office to all dealers in that region
dated 1/11/1962, it notes in reference to 700 and 900 models
''effective early january, the molding grooves of the body sill molding will
be painted black" . the letter also noted elsewhere the same change took
effect on chevy II novas.

hopefully that answers the questions on which cars use which moldings.
although a specific date of change is not given, we can assume cars with a
body build date through last week of december 1961 had no black paint, and
cars with a body build of 01C and later would have the black. cars with 01A
or 01B could have either depending when the specific plant phased in the
change.
best regards
lc

<the correct black for between the ribs on the rocker panel molding. I
had NOS
ones that had black gloss, flat black, semi gloss black, and even some
that
were not painted at all!!>

I always thought that they were unpainted on '62s and painted black (I
don't know whether flat or gloss) on '63s. Ditto the headlight bezels and
the
"turbine" style Monza wheel covers. Anybody know for sure? BTW, as for
the headlight bezels, I've begun to suspect that the black paint in the
ribs might have been a running change in '62 as when I was at the museum in

Ypsilanti I saw a factory photo of a '62 coming off the assembly line that
I'd
swear had the black paint on the headlight bezel. This is all mere
speculation on my part and I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable out there
can
set us straight. Enquiring Minds Wanna Know.
