[SCG] 1967 seat belt change, seat back, and survey

Gary, that's exciting news! Check what week your car was built - code on the
body tag, top left. Bet it says 11A, 11B or 11C, because #9875 was built
that first week of November (11A). With only 531 cars difference, there is
not that much time between them. If it is stamped 11C, then yours would
probably have been built on Monday the 19th or Tuesday the 20th and #9875 on
Thursday the 8th or Friday the 9th. If yours is stamped 11A, then it was
built on Friday the 9th and #9875 on Monday the 5th of that week. (My bet's
yours is 11B.) It all indicates that the changeover can be nailed down to
that part of November '66. (BTW the MSO for #9875 was issued on Thursday the
17th.)

As to the seats, yes, the Camaro used the same Astro seats. The Camaro
people have repopped their specific upholstery and the plastic seatbacks in
an array of colors, so they can use any of the '67-9 Corvair buckets in
their cars with no problem. One of the many shared parts courtesy of GM. Of
course, all theirs have the latches in them, as their cars are strictly 2
door cars.

BTW, the only difference between the 2 door and 4 door seats is that the 4
door doesn't have the latches on the outboard side of the seat back. They
have just one 1/2" hex head bolt coming up from the lower cushion, right
where the latch would be. Take out the bolt, and the seat folds forward just
like the 2 door seat. And the upholstery reflects the lack of the latch in
the upper seat cover, though you'll not see it with the seat back in place.

Subject: Re: [SCG] 1967 seat belt change, seat back, and survey

As it turns out, I just came in for a break while working on my 67 Monza and
saw this
Serial # 110406
Mine has the retractors and the fisher carriage on the seat belts.

Also has a metal seat back.

Funny story.....
I had an extra seat metal seat back off a 67 Corvair 4-door seat and had it
with me at a swap meet last year. Got $50 for it from what was obviously a
Camaro or Firebird guy. This seat back did not have a slot for the lever to
fold the seat forward. This year I had a set of 68 Corvair black bucket
seats needing re-covering, with plastic backs. Got $150 for them first thing
in the morning.......again had to be Camaro or Firebird people. He mentioned
they are re-producing the plastic backs now.

All,

I know that in ?67 there were two running changes to the seat belts The year
started out with the outer front strap being what I call the ?throw-down?
strap. It was just a single strap and no built-in retractor, so people
simply threw them down on the floor, or in some instances left them to hang
out the door. The factory intended that this strap would have a retractor
(at least on the Monza) but didn?t have the built-in retractor mechanism
ready in time for the first cars. So they made the first cars with the
throw-down strap and included the clip-on window shade retractor (the kind
that had been an over the counter dealer-installed accessory). I know that
at some time between #9875 and #13627, which is somewhere between the second
week of November and the first week of December, they made the change to the
built-in retractor, and kept that design through to the end of production in
?69.

The second design change was the change from the Fisher coach emblem on the
(inboard-mounted) buckles to the GM Mark of Excellence emblem. This happened
some time after #13627 but before #26069, built the second week of June.

The third running change I want to inquire about involves the seatback on
the Monza 2 door models. The seat back for the Astro bucket seats were
originally metal on all models. But at some time before #26069 in June (I
think somewhere around #23,000 or so) they changed the seatback on ONLY the
2 door cars to plastic, and left it that way to the end in ?69.

All three of these running changes would be good to put up for a survey, to
see if we can pinpoint the approximate time they made these changes.
