Tom - The Corvair mainshaft is hollow to allow the long input shaft to  pass 
through it to reach the input gear at the front of the trans (Since the  
clutch/engine is behind the axle). The Crown mainshaft duplicates the output  
portion to engage the differential, but doesn't need to be hollow, and  it must 
also mate with the GM input gear/shaft at the front of the transmission,  which 
is replacing the Corvair gear. The various needle bearings populating the  
interface between the main shaft and the GM input gear have been a troublesome  
part of the Crown heritage. But then, I have always had a poor relationship with 
 needle bearings. - Seth Emerson
