Jim- You'll need the battery cable on the large stud and the Purple wire on the "S" terminal. 
You should remove the resistor wire (White/red cloth covered wire) and replace it 
with a piece of yellow wire connected to the yellow wire going to the "R" terminal on the starter.
The resistor wire was for reducing 12 volts to something less for the old points ign. 
The HEI requires 12 volts in both the start and run positions.Ed
