Does anyone know of a flywheel that'll fit an 87-91 (L98) SBC that's 12"
or less in diameter across the ring gear teeth? The stock flywheel (153
tooth) is about 12.8". These are externally balanced and have different
bolt patterns than the early cranks. The later flywheels have some sort
of wobbling counterweight so they won't work.

I talked to machine shops around here about turning down the OD of a
stock flywheel but I can't find one that will do it. Maybe if I needed a
wagon wheel fixed I could find a shop to do that. Maybe redrilling a
smaller flywheel will work, I dunno yet.

I've looked at what various Fiero suppliers offer but I'm not liking
their solutions for my application.

Bob - What will you be using for a ring gear and a starter - and a clutch?
The Chevies all used the 153 tooth for the 10.5" disk or the 168 tooth for
the 11". Are you going to use a "special" from another application? Since
my V6 is an early (1985) it still has the large bolt-pattern crank flange,
and the internally balanced motor (at least as balanced as any 4.3V6 ever
is). I was able to find a small diameter flywheel to fit that crank, it even
uses the Corvair clutch - and starter, but I don't know what to look for in
the later small-pattern crank. How about another smaller GM motor, you
looked at the Fiero. How about the ECOTEC 4. Getting the external balance
correct may be tough. But I remember seeing an add-on weight that could be used
with a balanced flywheel to simulate the external-balanced unit.
