Mike,

Thanks for this information. It looks like you have put a lot of time and energy into this modification and it is great to see that you are satisfied with the results.
If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to give you a call.
Here is my cell # as well: 507.236.7498

Kent,
I installed the new springs yesterday and drove some bumpy roads today to settle them in. Looks like they will work just fine. They are 9.75" free length, 200# and should settle in at 6" spring height at the ride height I want. Of course with the coil overs, I can adjust the ride height if it's not quite right.
In modifying springs, keep in mind the leverage of the lower control arm with the coil mount being nearly in the middle. If you change the spring height 1", the ride height changes by nearly double on most cars. You already discovered that. With the Corvair, ball joint to shock mount is 5.5" and ball joint to inner control arm pivot is 13" resulting in a factor of 1.75 to 1.
My ride height is determined by wanting at least 7.5" of clearance under the Garvin spoiler which translates to about 24" from top wheel well to the ground. Hopefully no more damaged spoilers.
The front corner weight on mine is 525#. To determine spring load, you need to subtract the unsprung weight which is the parts not supported by the springs. Wheel, tire, hub primarily(estimated 100#). That means the spring is holding up 425#s but because of it's mechanical disadvantage, the force at the spring needs to be nearly 750#s.
The QA's I had were cut down to 9" and probably 300# so they only compressed 2+" and rode very hard. The new ones will compress 3.75" and be a much softer but still firm ride.
I modifyed the lower shock mount by welding two plates on the inside of the arm for stiffining and then redrilled the mounting hole about 1.5" lower.
That's it. It's time to drive this thing.
Mike

> A couple of months ago, I decided to switch to front coil overs to have more control over the ride height. If the top spring mount is kept stock, the choice of springs is very limited. I tried the conical spring from QA (3.5"x2.5"ID, 250#, 11"free length). After cutting 2", it was still too long and much too stiff. Coil Spring Specialties is making a pair of springs for me which should arrive in a couple of days. I am very anxious to install them after having made all the calculations necessary, I hope.

A C5 trans-axle with either a Power-Glide, Saginaw or 'top-loader' will allow the drive-train to move an approximate 4 to 5" and will not as negatively impact the center-of-mass and polar-moment...
