<VV> PG Question Strange new territory

Group,
    All of my Corvairs to this point have been 4-speeds. I am about to start
restoration
on a 66 powerglide car that hasn't run in several years. The question is, what
steps
should I take to prepare a powerglide to run again short of remove and have
rebuilt.
The trans was said to be good when parked. Should I add an additive of some
sort to
the fluid for cleaning purposes? Change the fluid before I run it the first
time? Or just
start it up and go and see what it does?

PS; This will be an "Ultra" restoration so lets dub it the SEUM (South Eastern
Ultra Monza)
It is intended to get my Son-in-law and grandson involved in the Corvair
