Is the "break in period" defined as 1000 miles, or 3000 miles, or
some other number, or is there something about the functioning of the
car that would tell me the engine is fully broken in?
The break-in is complete when the rings have seated. This will depend on the
type of rings used. Cast iron rings will be seated within the first 1000
miles. Chrome or Molly rings will take as long as 3000 miles. You can tell the
rings have seated when the engine stops using oil.
