I managed to trash an engine in my Lancia Appia last year by using a piece
of cardboard to make a gasket (not because I was cheap but because they take
2 weeks to get from Italy and we needed it quicker than that!).

On my Lancia Appia the engine is in three parts - crankcase, which contains
the crank; block, which contains the cylinders; and finally the head.

Between the crankcase and the block there is a cardboard gasket, and that's
the one we couldn't get. We therefore went to our local FLAPS for some
gasket paper and made one (a cornflake box would have been better!).

This year the engine went onto one cylinder, and on stripping it we found it
had broken rings in the other three.

The reason? Our gasket paper had been thinner than the original (as I said,
a cornflake box would have been O.K!) and this meant that the tops of the
pistons came up half a millimetre above the top of the block (we hadn't even
noticed). That was enough to cause them to contact the valves (the engine is
a hemi, and the valves come right done to the tops of the pistons). This
broke the rings as described above.

Since then I have never bitched about the prices OE gasket sellers like Lon
sell.

Up and at 'em, Lon...

Cheers

Alan
