Are earlies just more difficult. I am trying to remove the antenna of the
wifes 63.  The lates had a simple nut, you hold the bottom and turn the
nut.  This is round with nothing to grab onto.   It is ugly and will need
to be replaced anyway.

I removed the inner cardboard only to find a hose in the way of removing
it from the inside.  CUT THE GASKET and tried putting a wrench on the
bottom bolt and wacking with a screwdriver in the little slots, no
movement.  Soaked down with WD-40 and will try again.
