im not sure if this is what you are looking for but when i take a crank to my 
machine shop , they press the gear off then do the lathe work(polish/check 
etc) then press it back on. i have run several this way over many years with no 
ill effects. you can tell right away by feel/pressure on the press if it is 
going on tight enough. heck i used to reuse cam gears...(my flame suit is on) 
never failed for me. i did heat them up.
