Joe,
Clean the piston tops with a brush on a bench grinder then 
with a hammer gently tap the high/pointed spots down to 
eliminate them.  There will still be some low spots but ignore 
them.  They will eventually fill up with carbon.  Go ahead and 
use the pistons.
