Harry,
Your mind is good enough.  You are right about the 3 spd, etc. If anyone
does this, make sure the slot on top, if not symmetrical side-to side; one
edge may be lower than the other, allows reverse on a 4 spd to be engaged.

The three speed floor shifter base was taller. By maybe an 1". It's a
readily visable difference.
I remember years ago (30?) something about switching 3 speed-4 speed bases
around with the shift lever pivot pressed further up the shaft to reduce the
shift throw. But my mind isn't any good anymore.
