I have had good results from taking an old furnace motor, buying an arbor for 
it, and mounting a 7" cloth buffing wheel to it, and using a brick of 
"jewelers rouge" with it. One must be careful in the handling of parts coming in 
contact with such a device, because it will tend to want to remove the part from 
your hand (somewhat violently) if the cloth wheel catches an edge.
This buffing wheel and polishing compound has brought the new shine back to a 
lot of engine parts as well...
