I experienced this very problem 20+ years ago with a stock, unmolested 1961 
80-hp engine in a nice '61 Monza coupe.  The car was, at the time, under 20 
years old and had relatively few "little old lady" miles on it.  The 
teardown to find out what was wrong with the engine took us all the way to 
the factory camshaft, which had one worn-off lobe.  Never figured out why, 
just rebuilt the engine with a new camshaft and the car ran perfectly for 
years to follow.
