thought maybe I put something together wrong so I tore her all back apart to
take a look, but I didn't see anything out of place.  Any Ideas?

Sounds like a collapsed lifter to me.  Try running some ATF through the engine
just before your next oil change, or pull the lifters and soak them in ATF for
a while.
