If I remember correctly, on the '66 up 'saginaw' gearboxes, when shifting into second, you must push past the reverse idler gear. Since the car is jerky in reverse, and hard shifting into second, Iwould suspect a broken tooth on the reverse idler gear.  The transmission can be slipped off the differential and removed without dropping the entire drivetrain.
