    The late model throwout bearing has a flat thrust  face and the early has 
a rounded face. The flat face of the late bearing will  work on an early but 
the clutch pedal definitely has a different feel to it as  the late bearing 
starts using the outer edge against the pressure  plate fingers.
    That is the short version. if you want to discuss  apply angles I will go 
into farther detail.
