Hi Grant,
Do the side shrouds seem to be in the right place relative to the side rails 
of the car?  they should curve down in about the same place.  That judgement 
might help you understand if it's a powertrain placement problem or a shroud 
issue.

Is the metal front seal retainer strip on the firewall?  There should be a 
convoluted sheet metal strip that clamps the rubber flap to the body.  You do 
have the rubber flap on the front shroud, right?  

Some early model cars have inadequate clearance for a four speed 
transmission.  That will shove the whole enchilada back quite a ways.  The proper 
transmission support is required too.  BTW, the fore-aft position of the powertrain is 
important on an EM since that is how the rear wheel toe-in is set.  It will 
be really squirrly if the engine is 1.5" too far back! (Major toe-in)
