Chuck, please see below for my resposnses.

I would say it is toward the white side.  Does this mean we have a new
pope??  ggggg

I am voting for something I did since this problem did not exist until I
monkeyed with the carbs.  One other thing I did not mention is that I
sometimes smell fuel on startup even though I see no leaks in the engine
compartment.

I sure hope I don't have a head problem since Larry Shapiro rebuilt them
about 6.000 miles ago and as far as I can tell did a great job.
