Thanks Harry for the quick response on how to get the axle off -- and all
who have so graciously shared your exerience with a newbie. I cranked
that axle off and I now know why they are called needle bearings. I was
trying to keep everything together, but when the axle flew off the car
and bounced a few times next to my head there was no hope for keeping all
those little guys together!

So what was the chirp, squeak, and grind? I am guessing it is the wheel
bearings. With the axle removed I cannot freely rotate the drum (it acts
just like it did before...a little play and then it "hits" something and
stops. Time to read the shop manual and figure out how to get this
apart. I have already had one suggestion that I skip trying to replace
the wheel bearings myself and just buy the whole hub assy...be curious if
others agree.

Thanks again for the bandwidth and advice.
