That was smart! I have never seen any other car with its lever-type parking
brake under the dash. European cars have it near or on the centerline, and
American cars use either an axial-pull handle, a pedal, a twist handle, or
some combination of these. I wouldn't expect anyone not specifically
familiar with Corvairs to figure it out very fast. I grew up on Corvairs, so
it's second nature to me. But I've never seen it in anything else.
     I like it, too, but I wonder what inspired Chevrolet to endow the
Corvair with such an . . . individualistic parking brake. Why not the other
Chevys?

A few years ago when I took my Corvair to the Daytona convention via
Amtrak's
AutoTrain, I photocopied and enlarged the parking brake instruction page
from
the owner's manual (or "guide" as I think Chevy called it) and taped it to
the dash for the benefit of the jockeys who would be loading  and unloading
the
car on the train.
