Plastigage is available at most auto supply houses. It is a precisely
made round piece of plastic that is inserted into the bearing area and
the bearing caps torqued to the proper specs. The assembly is then
opened and the plastigage will be flattened on the bearing. The paper
wrap that the plastigage is packaged in is graduated so that when it is
laid on the flattened piece of plastic, the width of the plastic is read
as bearing clearance.
