Thanks again.  That did it.  

I will drive it a few days, at least till the next rainy spell before
tinkering with it.

I took it for a spin, with the VA plugged and the car drove better than
ever before.  Amazing what a few new parts do for you.  No knocking, no
hesitation, no stalling at lights.
Re-connected the VA and it still runs nice.

It still does not restart easily when hot.  Takes about 5 key turns.  

I think the timing is too advanced.  16 degrees, without the VA.


Negative coil terminal connects to distributor.
