<VV> 98 HP & 87 Octane plus 1961 fan finish

Dear folks,
 
Has anyone had experience, or advice, running an 8:1 CR, engine code YJ (Oct. 1960), 98 HP on 87 octane?
 
Also my information indicates that the 1961 sheet metal fan was probably a gloss black. Anyone refinished one? Powdercoated it?
 
For some reason the Lakewood's engine fascinates me. I expect am easily amused...
