The Corvair is a boxer as much as a Porsche flat six is a boxer. The Corvair
engine definitely fits the generally accepted definition of a boxer engine.

I believe that the Corvair is not considered a boxer because opposing
pistons do not "box," but reciprocate. More like the Mohammed Ali style,
perhaps, but not a true boxer, in which the center of mass of each opposing
piston pair doesn't move. Thus the requirement of a separate crank throw
for each piston in a real boxer.
