Eric
I hope not for you, but this sounds to me like a case of "door sill droop".
It is more common on Converts, and more late than early, but can also happen
on a hardtop.
The unibody is starting to flex more than was intended.

Did you try to pull up on the handle to try and open it that way??

Try to remember that at best, in the 60's cars were engineered to last about
10 years. The Corvair, engineering masterpiece that it is, still had flaws.
I doubt anyone would think that 39 years after the LM convertibles were
introduced, that there would be thousands of Corvair fans out there that
would cherish one of these cars!!!! Yet cherished they are.

More informed minds than mine may chime in as well, Gary Swiatowy showed me
an example of this symptom when showing me his stable of cars in 88.
Perhaps he might be inclined to elaborate more on the fate of that
convertible. I believe Gary works nights though, so a response might not be
forthcoming until in the morning.

Regards
HANK
