<VV> Transmission Fluid (Manual)

Query for the group -- not only Corvair, but ...

I have noticed a trend recently to put ATF in manual transmissions. On my
80 Toyota 4x4 I noticed it had ATF (after a transmission replacement after
200k miles). The owner's book calls for 90-140 gear oil. The Hanes book
calls for ATF.

My 62 Spyder has 90-140 gear oil because that is what I used to always use
... no other reason, so I put it in.

Both work fine. Where I live winters are 15 at night and 65 in the day,
summers are 100 day and 55 at night ... so we have extreme swings during a
day and during the year. I don't plan on changing fluids each season :-)

What would the group suggest for the Spyder? For the 80 Toyota?

Last -- a friend has an 83 Toyota with 250k miles. The synchros are shot
(no surprise, original tranny).
I don't know what is in it, but does anyone have any idea what would be
best to put in just to eek another 10k out of it (yes, I know that synchros
are unneeded if you know how to drive, but, alas, it is beyond her).

Should I try gear oil if it has ATF and STP if it has gear oil? I am open
to anything!
