Automakers sell scrap to mills so plants keep running
Amid fears of steel shortages, U.S. automakers are bartering with steel mills
to protect future supplies. Chrysler and Ford this month began shipping scrap
steel directly to the steel mills that supply them, in return for
uninterrupted deliveries of finished steel. General Motors also is considering a scrap
barter program.
