<VV> Springy Thingy in my Grease Cap

I just removed the wheel grease cap from the left front of my '68.  In
addition to the plastic speedo cable spindle, there is a twisted up,
half-chewed, circular stamped bronze spring in there.

What is that spring?  Do I need it?  Or should I just yank out the broken
pieces and reassemble everything without it?
