Hi Ewell
You will probably get a lot of traffic on this one!
The rear wheel bearing assembly on your '66 is a precision assembly. I can't
imagine a successful outcome from a shop that uses pliers to take it apart (I
can't even imagine that that is possible) or a shop that doesn't know how to
pack a bearing on a shaft.

You need a shop manual, a dial indicator, uncommon seals, shims, and most of
all a knowledgeable mechanic to properly put it back together. Some will say
that you can just put it back together with new grease and seals and the
set-up will not have changed. They would be right if you had checked the end-play
before disassembly and it was in spec. The last pair I did (last week) one
side was very, very tight and the other was OK. I recommend that you take a
look at the Chevy factory service manual. What's the point of servicing the
bearings if they are put back together incorrectly? Perhaps someone in your local
club probably has the knowhow or the special tools. Or, you could also send
them to anyone of the Corvair vendors for proper overhaul; that might be the
best recommendation of all!

I have apart a set of rear bearings removed from a 66 parts car. The machine
shop that broke them apart was unable to use his press for some reason, but
was able to get them apart with a very large puller. (Obviously larger than
what I tried to use). <unsnip>
