<VV> another weird corvair problem. it is lights this time (humor?)

I believe that it's entirely possible to have this set of conditions.  I had
something similar in my '78 Caddy.  There was a high resistance contact at
the dimmer switch.  Every time the lights were on, this contact would start
to cook and stink.  My daughter even pulled over on the freeway and called
me because she thought the car was on fire somewhere.  I replaced the dimmer
switch and crimped on a new set of connectors as well.  In a Corvair, the
stinking connection could be at the headlight switch, dimmer switch,
firewall connector or in the headlamp buckets themselves.  Next time you
shut 'er down, poke around feeling for a warm spot.
