Bob Helt's answer is the way to go unless the allen socket in the shaft is 
worn.  That's why GM put it there.  I have had to use a hammer (cushioned with a 
block of wood) on the box wrench to break a few bolts loose.  Removing the 
bolt should be thought of as a two part process;  1) Loosening the @#%* nut and 
then 2) unscrewing it.  If you haven't done one before just remember you're 
just trying to "worry it" loose first.  

And use the vise or something else to hold it secure (bolt it back on the 
engine if you have to) so the chances are reduced that you'll maim a hand when 
taking it off.

Hey, Joey,
Are you holding the shaft with the appropriate allen wrench? Hold the alt in 
a vise with the allen wrench up against the vise, then turn the nut ccw with a 
long handled box wrench. That will give you lots of leverage.
