I don't necessarily know all the available literature, but the coverage of
engine rebuilding and modification in Bob Helt's Classic Corvair impressed
me enormously (I've never quite rebuilt a Corvair engine from the bottom up,
I admit).
He participates in this forum bobhelt@aol.com.
     Sorry I can't help about that notch - I just don't know.

Subject: <VV> Bad piston??

Hi VV'ers,
I need advice from the engine builders here. I just bought a "nos" set of
standard cast pistons, sight unseen. When they arrived in the mail, I
inspected them and found one piston with a vertical notch about 1/64 deep,
1/32 wide, and 3/16 long straddling the first (top) piston ring area. It
looks like it was machined in, nice and smooth. Can I still use this piston
with new rings, or will I lose too much compression? I"ve taken Corvair
engines apart, but this will be my first Corvair rebuild. Any help will be
appreciated. Also, what book or manual has the best rebuild instructions?

Thanks,
Paul
