We will check the spark plugs tomorrow when they are cool. Could the
alternator be bad or going bad and not charging or could there be a short in
the wiring? The engine wire harness and the voltage regulator are both new
and the starter is rebuilt

Sam,
I'd bet on the alternator being bad. The battery was going down below the
voltage
needed to run the engine and when you shut it off the battery would recover
and
run the system again for a short time till it fell below the critical voltage
again.
Just take the alternator into a FLAPS and get it tested. Tell them to be
sure to
test it under a load and have them run it for a few minutes to see if it
fails as it
heats up the internal electronics. If you need to replace it they won't have
one
for a Corvair. Just get one for a 65-69 Cadillac or Buick or a Chevrolet
with A/C.
You can change front frame and pulley to make it work on a Corvair. Make
sure
they test it right out of the box, because once you open the case you void
the
warranty at most places.
