<VV> No Reverse Gear

Joe means reversed so the top "slot" is reversed. Where the shift lever
sticks down thru the base-the half ball on the shift lever rides on the
underside of the slot and surrounding spherical portion. This "slot" is not
symmetrical. One side of the "slot" is higher than the other, or you could
say the "slot" is a bit wider on one side of the center line-very slightly.
Original 3 spd bases might be different as well.

This allows the shift lever to go far enough to the side so the bottom part
of the lever will twist the shift tube beneath the floor.

There is another thing that should be checked. If you go the extent of
taking the shifter base out of the car and have to reverse the shift lever
and reinstall, you ought to check the little dowels that stick out of the
sides of the base. These wear and make shifting sloppy. A left over roller
bearing will fit or dowels-which I have, BTW and will replace them in your
base for a nominal fee-email offline.

Have you got the DIRECTION of reverse at the transmission correct? When
you're looking toward the back of the car, reverse is found to the extreme
COUNTERCLOCKWISE. Don't use Vise-Grips - they'll score the shaft. Use a #1
Philips-head screwdriver through the hole in the shaft.
If you can shift the transmission this way, consider the possibility
that the base of your shift lever is in the car (and on the lever)
backwards. If this turns out to be the case (the base is marked with an
arrow or something - consult the Shop Manual), you'll have to remove the
lever/base, take it apart, and assemble it the other way (the way that lets
you shift into reverse).

I pulled my 65 out yesterday from where I had backed it in last week and
found I have no reverse. Last night I tried tightening the bolts holding
the shifter to the floor,
thinking I may have left them too loose, and it only made everything stiff
and immobile. So I took it apart and replaced the upper spacer, which was
gone, and used white grease on the upper and lower spacers. I tightened it
back to where there was no slop but had smooth, easy operation. I still had
no reverse. Shifter will not move to the left past the 1-2 side of the
pattern in neutral.
