Having just installed an Ignitor II and a Flamethrower II, only three weeks
ago and still having the instructions for both, I can say for sure they
state that it is to be installed to a 12 V source. They even show in their
wiring diagram, how you are supposed to wire around a resister wire or block
and go to the 12V side before the resistor, with the red wire from the
Ignitor, while leaving the resistor wire running to the coil.

That is their secondary choice of wiring it. The first is to run the red
wire to the + on the coil which has a pure 12 V running to it.

I got a little creative and eliminated the resistance wire, by cutting the
wire running to the coil, where it comes out of the Tee connector, that
contains the resistor wire and the wire running down to the starter. I then
jumpered this coil wire over to the other side of the wiring harness
connector and got the pure 12V source (the engine side of the block runs
directly to the resistor wire). So now I have eliminated the resistor wire
going to the coil, but the resistance wire still goes to the Tee with the
wire going to the starter. Now I have the original wire still going to the
coils + terminal with 12 V running through it; no having to run a new wire
and taping the whole wiring harness to hide it. The only give away to
running an electronic ignition is the red wire from the distributor going to
the coil + terminal.

After I figured out the wiring of the resistor wire (shop manual), the rest
was quick and easy. But they are adamant about using +12 V to the Ignitor,
in the instructions that come with it.
