<VV> Engine Assembly Lubrication / Non Detergent?

Ever wonder where this "Non Det."  for breakin came about?

I'm 57......started driving in '63.......lot of Non Det.  still around 
then........

This is what was going on....

People still did their own "overhauls" [  change piston rings / lap the 
valves /  shim bearings or replace as needed]

Most didn't have a Torque wrench......let alone a cylinder 
hone...........you'd borrow a "ridge reamer" [ to break the cast iron from the part of the 
cylinder ABOVE the top compression ring to be able to get the piston out!] from 
your neighbor / friend

Emory cloth  was used to "ruff" the shiney walls.......

DETERGENT  oils had ADDITIVES in them....that made things slippery!    Non 
DET.  Didn't

To get a set of cast iron rings to seat on relatively SHINEY cylinders 
walls..you needed all the help you could get!  Heaven forbid if you used a set of 
those NEW CHROMED RINGS!!!!

This is where the old "Bon Ami"  treatment came in.........ggggg
