Harry is right, the majority of "no reverse" complaints can be traced to
shifter linkage adjustment and wear issues, but if you have correctly selected
reverse at the transmission (CCW and in), you probably do have an internal
failure. The pin that falls out is located in the "reverse idler lever", akin
to a shift fork. You may be able to access the pin through the side cover,
but it would be much better to pull the trans. It is common to remove the
trans separately, but you have to remove the transmission support bracket too.
Remember that the trans has to slide about 15" before it is free of the input
shaft. It should take less than 30 minutes to remove it.

To quote the '64 New Product Information Guide: "The reverse idler lever is
redesigned on these units ['64-5] and no longer requires the pressed-in pins.
This change eliminates the possibility of the pins falling out with there
resultant complaint of "no reverse".

We saw one of these failures on VV about a month ago.
There you go. Just double check that you really got it in reverse when you
manually selected it at the trans.

I have a 1963 Monza Coupe with a 4speed. My reverse has diappeared.
I have disconnected the shifter coupling at the transmission, and rotated the
trans. shifter shaft to put in reverse. The car will not move in reverse.
This I belive indicates that the trouble is somewhere within my trans. I have
been advised that there is an pin that could have fallen out of the reverse
system.
