Has my alternator failed?  With ignition off, the ALT lite is lit. Connecting the ground terminal causes clicking from the voltage regulator. Idiot lites were off while I drove today. However, earlier in the day, I smelled burning insulation for just a moment.   
   Can I check any of this with just my volt/ohmmeter?     -ron 65,66 (-65 going nowhere)
