Well, go one or two better, and follow what the VW Vanagon guys are doing. 
Connect a Subaru flat six, either the 2.7L, 3.3L or 3.0L engine to a Porsche or 
VW tranny. The 3.3L is the most powerful at 235 HP, and if you can find one, 
probably the most worthwhile. the 2.7L makes 145 HP net, and hardly seems worth 
the trouble. The 3.0L is the newest and most compact, and of you get a 2005 
model, it's 250 HP. And probably the priciest. 
Or, if you can find one cheap, get a 911 engine and tranny and keep the thing 
air cooled. 
All of these should allow you to keep it all under the original floor!

finger at 2 am or so all the time..  practice one finger typing by using the 
computer for morse code learning...speeds ya right up.
