<VV> spring compression

I'm rebuilding the front end of my 66 vair. I have a
spring compressor but it is too big to remove the
front springs, it compresses it but not enough to
remove it .  What is the best way to remove the spring
without blowing a hole through my chest?  Is there a
smaller compressor or some other miracle device, I
looked through the service manual but didn't find
anything.
