Kirk,
The way I did it IIRC:

* rope through spring and control arms so it can't fly loose
* car on jack stands
* floor jack under lower control arm
* loosen (don't remove) nut on ball joint
* remove bolts on caster rod.
* lower floor jack till there is JUST A BIT of clearance between jack 
and control arm
* loosen spindle from ball joint (I used a lever-type joint seperator) 
until it bangs loose against the ball joint nut
* compress with floor jack till tension is off the nut
* remove nut (spring bomb is now armed!!!!)
* slowly lower floor jack to release tension on spring.

Eventually it will get to the point where you can remove the jack then 
depress the control arm by hand to remove the now-loose spring.
