Here we are, six weeks later and the paint project on my front-wheel drive
GMC motorhome is finally done; it's ready to pull the Corvair somewhere! I
did the roof first, then the lower body two-tone, then the upper body. The
body came out very well - I used hardener and reducer designed for higher
temperatures to retard drying and allow the paint to really level out. The only
real disaster was the roof. It came out very well at first but later overspray
settled on it and killed the gloss. I got a bum steer from a painter-friend
who indicated that all I needed to do was mask up 18"; I should've bagged
the entire roof. Yesterday, I had to bag the entire motorhome from the roof
rail down and clearcoat the roof. This fixed the overspray problem but the
clear didn't level well - I'm glad it's a motorhome and no one can see the roof!

I'm really impressed with PPG's low-cost Omni acrylic urethane. I don't
have the exact cost comparison but my impression is that it's about half the
cost of the PPG Deltron system. This saves probably $200 (about 1/2?) in
materials. The only thing that was disappointing was the clearcoat, but PPG sells a
retarder that would promote leveling and they also sell a slower drying
clear that can be even further retarded. The slow drying (and self leveling)
MC161 would be my choice for a future project. Onto carpeting and replacing the
cracked exhaust manifold (only $250 in parts...). The EO Corsa convertible
is next in line, awaiting the installation of the Binion EFI motor!
