<VV> Windshield Storage

Does anyone have a good method to store windshields?  I have seen  the wall 
racks at glass shops with windshields stored on wooden dowels, however  I do 
not have room to install something like that on a wall.  
 
Instead I'm thinking about building a floor mounted storage rack with  
cushioned places where the glass will sit, vertical dowels to keep the  windshields 
from touching each other and probably a thin plywood cover to  protect them.
 
Please advise if you have another approach you recommend.
