<VV> Engine Code XX

After having searched through the information I have available, I have come
up with bupkes so I'm seeking the group's collective wisdom for an answer.
Does anyone know the make-up of the XX engines as shipped?  I have always
assumed they were all made as "base" replacement engines but have seen the
XX cases wearing heads for everything from 80HP/3-speeds to turbos and in
earlies and lates.  If there is a difference depending on application, is
there any way to tell from the outside?  Really didn't want to take one
apart and compare parts if someone already has.  Thanks.
