As for carbon in the last threads of a head, all you need is a tool from 
NAPA or other FLAPS. I have one made by K-D that will chase two thread sizes 
and fits neatly in a sparkplug socket. It will reach through the end of the 
threads so id the head is on the car you need to make sure the piston is 
down the bore to prevent any interference.
